Dear Friends, I’m really excited about our upcoming day camp! POSAM (Preserving Our Southern Appalachian Music) is a non-profit organization that is sponsoring this YAM (Young Appalachian Musicians) program. It is a Traditional Arts and Music, TAM YAM Camp, and will be held at The Holly Springs Center, 120 Holly Springs School Rd in Pickens, July 16-20th. The camp is open to ALL (from ANYWHERE) rising 3rd-9th graders. In the mornings instruction is offered from local musicians in the traditional instrument of their choice (fiddle, mandolin, guitar, and banjo—all levels). Afternoons will be spent doing many of these activities: nature activities, clogging/square dancing, water activities, folk singing, jug band, instrument making, Appalachian cooking, pottery, woodworking, jewelry making, dulcimer, and more. This year we also hope to have a professional band to spend the day with us and work very closely with the students. This year, since camp is located at the beautiful Holly Springs Center in Northern Pickens County, there will be better access to classes in their School of Mountain Arts, and there will be more room to “spread out” for music lessons. We’ll also be doing something special on Friday. The phenomenal bluegrass band, who played at Jubilee this year—Carolina Blue—will spend the day with us and conduct workshops on harmonies, stage presence, playing as a band, etc. Camp will cost according to the “lunch status” of the participants: Paid lunch-$210/week, Reduced lunch-$140/wk, Free lunch-$110/wk. If students aren’t in a public school, they’ll need to pay “Paid Lunch” rate. Students can bring their own instruments or rent the instruments at camp for a nominal fee. Parents must provide transportation each day but lunch will be provided. Camp will run 8:30-4 but provides extended care from 7:30-8:30 and/or 4-5:30 for an extra fee. Campers will be chosen first-come, first-serve and we ask that you send ½ the fee and the registration form by the first part of June. Even if you can’t send the registration fee yet, please email/send registration info to Betty (below) very soon. Checks should be made to POSAM and money may be given to the YAM Program Director at any YAM school or sent to Betty McDaniel, Director, 792 Holly Springs Sch. Rd, Pickens, SC, 29671. The balance of the money will be due Friday, July 6th. If you have questions or concerns, contact Betty at 864-878-4257. Looking forward to a great camp!
