The School of Mountain Arts and Heritage (SOMAH) is dedicated to celebrating the arts and heritage of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. At SOMAH, you can immerse yourself in the handcrafts that our ancestors had to master to thrive – making baskets, throwing pots, making wood-turned bowls and hand-carved spoons, knitting and crocheting essentials, cooking over a fire, gardening, and keeping bees.
We offer courses in woodworking (lathe-turning & carving), painting (water color, oil/acrylic, on canvas and silk), pottery (wheel & handbuild), stained glass, basket-making, beekeeping, bread-baking, outdoor skills, and many others. Our classes are offered on most Saturdays and some weekdays. If you don't see a class offering on a topic that interests you, please let us know!
